Born: 30 August 1988, Barrow-in-Furness, England.
Perhaps the unluckiest rider in Britain, the likeable Cumbrian will hope that 2012 is finally the year he can stay injury-free.
After making his debut in 2003 for the Swindon Sprockets, Roynon went on to represent Armadale, Mildenhall, Newcastle, Boston, Buxton and Plymouth at National League level, as well as winning the Conference League Riders Championship in 2006.
Prodigiously talented, Roynon’s career has been hugely blighted by injury and there have been times where his career was in serious jeopardy. However, in 2009 it was more than his career in doubt as Roynon suffered severe injuries whilst practicing with Team Great Britain. He spent a week on life-support at Adenbrooke’s Hospital after suffering a broken neck and developed a blood clot on the brain.
Many suspected that Roynon’s career would be over, but that thought never crossed his mind and he made an incredible recovery. In December 2009 Roynon made his comeback in the Christmas Cracker at Scunthorpe, scoring seven points. He agreed to ride for Workington for 2010 but left later in the season after being sacked before a meeting with Edinburgh.
Roynon subsequently signed for Stoke but was again left cursing his luck after breaking his ankle, which had previously been broken in 2006. Another swift recovery led to him penning a two-year deal with Kings Lynn, but 2010 ended with Roynon on the sidelines with knee ligament damage.
2011 looked like being a busy year for Roynon as he signed for Redcar and Dudley and also agreed to ride for Kings Lynn as their number eight. His form was excellent and many thought that he was starting to get back to his best, before disaster struck when he broke his femur in a crash at Ipswich in April.
Roynon again bounced back to resume his role’s in both the Dudley and Redcar sides, but his comeback was stop-start after some heavy crashes upon his return. He ended this season in fine form, however, and reminded everyone of his huge potential.
2012 will be the busiest year of Roynon’s career to date, as he has signed to ride in all three British Leagues, with Coventry, Workington and Dudley. Still only 23, Roynon is more than capable of becoming the National League’s top rider in 2012.
